3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.
In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He lavished on us.
In all wisdom and insight 9 He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him 10 with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth.
In Him 11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, 12 to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory. Ephesians 1:3-12
God IS love (I John 4:8). It was natural for Him to create a plan which would most fully express that love (along with, and in perfect harmony with, His other attributes and excellencies). He thought through all possible details of all possible options, and in His wisdom chose the single best plan which would most fully express His love.
“greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13
…….His plan would be to lay down His life. But, to most fully express the greatness of His love, He would lay down His life not for His “friends”, but for His enemies.
6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8
So, God determined prior to creating anything (“before the foundation of the world”) a plan – and implemented that plan through His creation of everything until it’s ending in Heaven – that would have the death, burial and resurrection of Christ as the focal point of that plan, all for the purpose of showing the full extent of His love.
There are many implications of this for us personally – but we should especially view our daily lives in the overarching context of God’s love.
